- The new BCS standings have been released. The Top 5 has now suprises as it reads Texas, Alabama, Penn State, Oklahoma, and USC. I think we all know it is just a matter if Texas and Alabama can survive schedule in the two toughest conferences in the nation. The next three teams outside the top five are even more interesting. Georgia is sixth, Texas Tech seventh, and Florida is eighth. Texas Tech has the ability to make a big jump when they take on Texas on Saturday. Georgia and Florida also play on Saturday with the loser being pretty much eliminated from national title play.
- I know a lot of critics will look at Penn State’s 13-6 win at Columbus and say it was not very impressive. I disagree. Sure the offense wasn’t clicking but this was the first game where they faced adversity. It was good to see them stand up to the test and their defense really played great. That was a tough and well earned win on the road in Columbus. Now I think they are a virtual lock to go undefeated with remaining games with Iowa, Indiana, and Michigan State.
- That Oklahoma State-Texas game sure was something to watch. This is the best team Mike Gundy has had and they played very well. Their pass rush really did a nice job making plays and giving their offense a chance. You can make the argument based on their performance against No. 1 Texas that they shouldn’t drop in the polls at all.
- Colt McCoy and Jordan Shipley continue to set the Big 12 on fire. It is amazing how Texas can continure to look so good against some really terrific opponents. The good sign for them was that their defense actually looked good in holding the Cowboys to 24 points and they made big plays down the stretch. Their defense will be the key to their title hopes and will need to make stops against high flying Texas Tech on Saturday.
- Give credit to Florida State who believe it or not, hold their destiny in their own hands in the Atlantic division. They have the chance of winning out to play in the ACC Title game. The key has been their running game and the duel threat of QB Christian Ponder. They have a tough test on Saturday with Georgia Tech but an ACC Title this year is not out of sight especially considering it is a down year for the conference.
- I’m not sure I really care about the Big East anymore this year. What an awful display that was by Pittsburgh to give up that many points to Rutgers. West Virginia now finds themselves in first place. Fine. Just call me when it’s over.
- I watched that USC-Arizona game and boy did USC play well defensively. Arizona is a heck of an offensive team as they came in as a top ten scoring offense. USC just completely shut them down in the second half and took over the game. However, Ohio State losing to Penn State put a further dent in their national title hopes. Penn State now can go unbeaten and it also hurts USC’s strength of schedule which was already poor to begin with.
- If there is going to be one BCS buster team this year expect it to be Boise State. The reason is that they are well coached and already have some national recognition for what they have done in past years. With their only tough game left being against Fresno State, expect the Broncos to run the table and win the WAC. That could very well lead to a BCS bid.
- I have been saying all along that LSU could not contend as an elite team because of their weaknesses on defense. Their pass rush is poor and you saw Georgia do almost anything they wanted on offense. Give credit to the Bulldogs and Matthew Stafford who played great. They are going to give Florida all they can handle on Saturday. And can someone please tell me why the Georgia-Florida game is a so-called “neutral field” game if it is taking place in Jacksonville?
