We are heading into the weekend which means they are a new group of movies that are being released. Let’s take a closer look at some of these new releases and how they will fare.
- W.: Oliver Stone’s new film seems to be generating a lot of talk. His biographical pic stars Josh Brolin as President Bush, Elizabeth Banks as Laura Bush, and Richard Dreyfuss as Dick Cheney. After seeing the trailer I was left sitting on the fence about this film. The reviews have been decent but not great. The cast is exciting but I can’t really expect anything great out of this film. This is no Frost/Nixon I would think. However, I’m sure I’ll be curious enough to at least rent it.
- Max Payne: This film is obviously based on the video game with the same title. It stars Mark Wahlberg as Payne as well as Ludacris and Mila Kunis. I always worry about video game adaptation especially after recalling how little fun I had watching Hitman. It is also pretty hard to get a good read from the trailer. I think it could be pretty cool if they make dark and crazy enough. I also think Wahlberg is a good choice here. If I’m bored and keep my expectations low, this could be some good mindless fun. Probably not but you never know.
- The Secret Life of Bees: The Secret Life of Bees is the next release to appear here in the Buzz (insert bad bee joke here). This movie stars Dakota Fanning who runs away from her father to be with her caregiver (Jennifer Hudson). And it involves beekeeping apparently. This will probably be a nice movie for mothers and young girls to enjoy. However, the rest of us will be better off passing on this one.
- Sex Drive: This is a new raunchy sex comedy that involves a high school kid taking his father’s car on a road trip to meet a chick he met online. This seems to just be a spinoff of Euro Trip to me. I get the feeling that this sex comedy will try to be like the wildly successful Superbad, but will end up being more like American Pie in terms of quality. The early reviews seem to support me. Sex Drive had received just a 52% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
- What Just Happened?: This is the new comedy starring Robert DeNiro as a struggling producer who is having trouble getting his latest picture made. The cast is good with John Turturro, Bruce Willis, Stanley Tucci, Sean Penn, Catherine Keener, and others. The premise has the promis for a good comedy but the trailer seemed disappointing. The reviews are mediocre so this is probably a comedy I’m not desperately seeking out.
- Morning Light: Here is a documentary about 15 sailors being trained to compete very challenging races. Watch the trailer here and I’m sure that will convince you to skip this one.
